Phases and actions of the project

Native plant heritage exhibition

One of the objectives of the Botanical Gardens is the presentation, on their premises, of the living collections of species of interest for the conservation of the native plant heritage; these plants are either unique, endemic, vulnerable, threatened, or species of scientific and economic interest. The rock gardens, among other forms of presentation in the gardens, are suitable places for the exhibition of chasmophytic and rock-dwelling species that are so abundant in our Mediterranean landscapes. The creation of a network of gardens among the partners is an interesting action for public awareness concerning the conservation and dissemination of knowledge of species in general, which are the main goals of four work. Eight partners will actively participate in this action which will be coordinated by partner 5 (JBS).

Action 6.1 : Consultation for construction and maintenance of exhibition

Partner 5 (JBS), who has a great deal of experience in rock garden construction which can host the micro habitats favouring the growth of the species to be studied, will share this knowledge with the other partners for the establishment of a correct methodology for the construction and upkeep of places that have to serve in the conservation of the species, as well as exhibits for the public.

Action 6:2 : Conditions of cultivation and exposition

For every species that has to be cultivated, the ideal conditions of cultivation and exposition will have to be determined to safeguard their survival. This action will be realised among all partners, who will share their own experience with other members.

Action 6.3 : Exchange of plant material

The foreseen species for the expositions can be species of local interest or species from other regions of the project, within the objective of demonstrating – thematically - the biodiversity of the Mediterranean as a whole. In the second case, material will be exchanged among different partners, within the guideless, of course, of pertinent international rules and regulations.

Action 6.4 : Cultivation and sustainability of species

Every partner proceeds, in their respective centre, with the cultivation and sustainability of the selected species, by applying the recommendations and advice offered by actions 6.1 and 6.2.

Action 6.5 : Popularization and dissemination of material

The Botanical Gardens are centres of reference for the scientific dissemination and awareness regarding plant biodiversity conservation. The centres are responsible for producing printed material that promotes the project and publicises the studied species and the problems concerning conservation in nature and in the gardens. The partners who do not have a Botanical Garden must distribute the printed material of dissemination in a clear and visible way next to rock gardens in a way that is easily understood by visitors.
